Historic Defenses
Crown Point just finished the season allowing 59 points on the season. 20 of those points coming against the JV when there was a running clock.
Is this one of the best defenses the region has ever seen? I know Lowell has had some great years, Merrillville, Andean, Valpo.. what are some of the best defenses we have seen?

Re: Historic Defenses
I think crown points defense is awesome. But playoffs will say a lot about it historically when it faces some good teams. There are only three good teams in the DAC. And the gap between 1-8 now is way more the I’ve ever seen. Early 2000s there would be those top 2-3 teams but then you would have a few middle teams at 5-4. Portage, Laporte, and Chesterton are awful. Lake Central is decent. Michigan City is decent. And decent is almost a stretch. I want to see how they play in the regional. But definitely a top defense of the past decade. They also played taft and Lowell. Which are terrible as well.
Re: Historic Defenses
As far as the last decade or so goes, I’m going to have to go with 2019 Valpo as the best I have seen. Only offense that gave them fits was New Pal in the state title game, and even then most of New Pal’s yards only came on a couple of big plays. As far as region defensive coordinators go, they don’t get much better than Sam Bernardi

Be careful, my boy warrior doesn't take kindly to Lowell's name being ran through the mud. Historically, the 1976 Merrillville team that beat Cathedral for the State Championship had an amazing defense. The 1987 Hobart defense held Jasper to 2 1st downs and a whopping 83 yards of total offense in the State Championship. The '94 Portage defense was stellar as well. Their achilles heal was a massive Castle OL that wore them down in the 4th quarter of the '94 5A State Title game.Richielikelionel wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 8:12 amThey also played taft and Lowell. Re: Historic Defenses
List of historic defenses begins with 87 Hobart and 97 Gtown.
87 Hobart was the best defense I have seen in person for a high school team. They were just suffocating. Teams could do nothing.
97 Gtown was not far behind.

THanks for posting that. Such a fun time in the Brickie Bowl in those days.
Definitely a dynasty.
RIP Coach Howell and the Bowl!

I ain't your "boy." I just think it's disrespectful to throw around some of the terms about Lowell as if they're down for the count:Boilernation wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 1:13 pmBe careful, my boy warrior doesn't take kindly to Lowell's name being ran through the mud.
-they're 42-18 the last 5 seasons with two sectional titles
-they've rebounded with a modest two game win streak to end the regular season. A so called "lost" season has chance to end a respectable 6-6
-a good sectional draw likely gives the underclassmen 3 more weeks of practice, which is big for program development
-the MS team had a strong season, only losing to Merrillville.
-growing community
-PW program has a ton of kids
-new facilities opening up mid year next season
-all without any transfers I might add....
Never count out the Devils.

Haha! I'm Switzerland in that regard. One kid went to IU and the other was a Boiler.
